Years ago, in my second book, I wrote an essay on how much narcissism played into parenthood: creating a person that's half you, a forever friend, someone who looks up to you, who you can control (at least for a time), etc. It's a little bit of a cynical view of something that, of course, entails a lot of truly positive feelings and sacrifices, but it's good to appreciate all the psychological dimensions.
