Yea, unfortunately, it looks the aftermath is never really one of remorse and recompense. It seems more likely that some people will stick to believing these things no matter what happens.

That's why playing with a person's reputation is such a dangerous thing to do. Most of the time whatever damage that's done can't be undone, and you can't prove a negative.
