We Are More Than Biden or Trump Supporters

As Americans, we may strongly dislike one another’s preferred candidate for president, but we would be fools to forget that we share a deeper bond as compatriots.

The last four years haven’t been an easy time for me. I could care less about a large plot of land, a piece of fabric (no matter how dyed in history it is), or even a name, but the United States of America is an idea. It is the world’s first experiment of founding a country “by the people, for the people.” It is the living embodiment of a philosophy that argues that people can live free under an open sky. So early in our infancy, only two centuries after our inception, I see us being challenged by a would-be authoritarian. As he sets about engaging in every manner of corruption imaginable, and perverting the Department of Justice through that spineless sycophant, William Barr, my disdain for the man ever intensifies. Yet, millions and millions of Americans support President Trump.

I would crawl over barbed wire to vote him out of office, but I want to make clear that I still harbor nothing but goodwill towards my fellow countrymen and women. There are a thousand different contexts within which good people can be tricked into loving a bad person. When the fever of the zeitgeist has subsided, hopefully sooner rather than later, the calm retrospection on this time will bring all of us to…
