That's actually a great way to put it, and the fact that the "chaff" are full people is really the heart of what I was trying to get at.

It's dehumanizing because it's so poorly targeted. I have to guess off of 5 pictures and 3 written prompts who I want to meet on a given night. Most of them time, I quickly realize that it was a mistake.

Any approach, like you described, where you can get to know people before you approach them romantically would be great, and would preclude something like the mechanical process I wrote about.
