That is interesting. I think I'm guilty of some of that while I've been abroad.

Like I said in the article, I grew up in Miami Gardens when a huge majority of the population there was Black. Since all my friends were always Black growing up, I've felt most comfortable around Black people thereafter. My friends at work or school, even when those organizations were almost entirely white, were still always the Black people there.

And I've expected some of the same cultural similarity when I've run into Black people from other parts of the world here (mostly Africa), and all of a sudden, they're avid Trump supporters, don't interact with me the same way I'm used to back home, etc.

And I mean, of course, silly me to think it would be otherwise. But it was such a natural signaler of someone who I felt would understand me a little better back home, yet it was ultimately just a label by race.
