I'm not sure. You'd think it's most likely the Japanese government putting out propaganda to increase tourism, which it may very well be.

But I think a lot of Japanese cultural products--like anime, Japanese cars, video games and electronics, etc.-- have naturally given the country an almost deified position in the minds of many.

The economic rise of Japan, considering its size and other geographical limitations, was, indeed, very impressive as well. I know in the 80s or 90s, it was widely expected that they would surpass the US in GDP.

Moreover, if you come as a short-term visitor, it's hard not to be in awe. You see all the best parts of collectivism but none of the downsides. I'd imagine no people on Earth see Japan as more flawed than the Japanese themselves. Them and the foreigners working here are the ones that have to keep this all moving.
