I think that’s a great point to make. I do think a lot of people seek to differentiate themselves in small, superficial ways, in order to assume a more individualized identity. But I also feel that at its core the drive for that deeper individualization is little more than a meaningless impulse of the ego as well — sort of like buying fancy new shoes or whatever other superficial changes a person might make. We exist in a physical reality infinite by any measure, we all live on a speck and only for a moment, and a day will come when no matter what we do there will be no one to remember us or anything we did, so our existence will, then, be no different than a dream. I think there’s merit to just living a happy, simple, comfortable life, though I personally feel a very intense urge for the same deeper differentiation that you do.
