I mean, it sounds like you're arguing that progress has never endured, and therefore instead of being linear, it is a repetitive process of doing and undoing.

But it doesn't sound like you're arguing that progress cannot occur. If it can occur, then we need to try, and having a system of ethics that leads us there is going to be key.
