I hear what you’re saying. It seems ridiculous. But honestly, I think most of them are being genuine. It seems to me that it would be obvious as well, but when it’s all you know and you blend into it seamlessly it just disappears against the backdrop.

As an example from my personal experience, I watched “Barbie” last year and at the end of it, they had an all female Supreme Court. I reflexively thought to myself for a second, “Well, that’s a bit extreme, they could at least have some men.” But the Supreme Court was all men for most of its history. All elected office was held only by men for most of our history. When I thought of the inverse, it felt so oppressive, but in all my time alive—despite considering myself a feminist, writing on feminism, and reading books on feminism—I had never run that thought experiment and really asked myself, “What would it be like if the tables were turned?”

I wouldn’t underestimate ignorance or just how much an environment that is the only one we’ve ever known—especially if it benefits us and we really have no reason to think of it—can fade into the background and never rise to our conscious awareness.
