I don't know that you can fairly call it cringy, when it's no more systematic a process of courting a woman than pulling out chairs and opening car doors. But I suppose it's nothing new that society views two fundamentally identical acts as acceptable or unacceptable depending on how prevalent they are.

My issue with postponing sex is that it's do or die. I don't want to spend a month getting attached to a person to learn that I'm not interested in them sexually.
