Introduction

I interact a lot with new writers on Medium, and in my efforts to help them get started on the platform, the most frequent question I encounter is: “How can I get more people to see my posts?” The following is a quick, introductory guide to promotion on Medium.

Publication

On Medium, there are what’re called “publications.” A publication is an entity that has followers but publishes the works of others. If your work is published by a publication, it will be seen by their followers. Submission to publications is crucial for increased readership on Medium. You can find lists of Medium publications online, and you can usually find submission guidelines on their pages.

Curation

Whatever you post to Medium, sometime after it goes public, is likely to be reviewed by Medium’s editorial team, and they can decide to pick the post for “further distribution.” If your post is chosen for distribution, it will show up in people’s feeds and reach a much wider audience of Medium readers. Only posts meeting Medium’s distribution guidelines are chosen.
