Definitely, and I believe it was La Rochefoucauld who said, “There is merit without eminence, but there is no eminence without merit.” Mostly everyone who is successful is deserving in some way, though it seems to be mostly for marketing. The wisdom of the crowd is definitely a thing, even if it’s not absolute.

I agree with what you said about literature as well. I think it’s a particularly difficult thing to be recognized for one’s writing. And I’ve also consoled myself with the belief that if I write something that’s truly masterful, it’ll get read eventually, even if it’s after I’m gone, but honestly, I really would like my roses while I’m around to smell them.
