Having seen as a teenager how my mom’s partner’s addiction changed our household (including by spurring on my mom’s substance abuse), I’ve seen just how challenging this dynamic can be. After spending lots of time reading neurology studies, I’m always struck by the similarities in the brain between bond formation (love) and drug addiction. It makes it all the more interesting to consider the interplay of the two in a relationship.
